How to Make Tie Dye TShirts

This Project reminds me of my friend who loved to wear tie dyed shirts and batik. I would recall , she would be wearing a lot of beads to matched the tie dyed shirts. Materials Needed:

  • Tables for a Workstation
  • Plastic Tablecloths
  • Buckets
  • Water
  • Soap
  • T-shirts
  • Dye
  • Rubber Bands
  • Plastic Gloves
  • Resealable Plastic Bags
  • Dryer

Procedures

  • 1. Set up a place to work. Setting up outside would be best, since a mess is highly likely. Cover the workstation with a plastic sheet of some sort. A disposable plastic tablecloth is perfect for this project. Have a bucket of soapy water on hand.
  • 2. Prepare the dye following the directions on the package. Any kind of fabric dye will work for this project.
  • 3. Soak the T-shirts in cold water first. Create your design by twisting the shirts. Knots can also be tied in the shirts for different look. The old-fashioned bull’s eye look is created by wrapping rubber bands around the shirt. This is the step to get creative and have fun.
  • 4. Put on the plastic gloves and dip the tied shirt into the dye baths. If just one color is desired, soak the shirt in the dye bath and let sit according to directions on the dye packet. If a multicolored shirt is desired, then dip the shirt into the colors desired.
  • 5. Wring the T-shirt out and place it in a resealable plastic bag. Leave the T-shirt in a bag and leave it overnight. After sitting overnight, take the shirt out of the bag and rinse until the water runs clear.
  • 6. Put the shirt in the dryer. The heat from the dryer will set the color into the fabric
